If you are reading this for anything other than SB number sequences from the SBDU then please make sure you corroborate my information with other resources. Although the explosion of social media has meant that there are numerous Facebook groups and internet forums where information is given, I frequently see this quite simple topic explained or interpreted incorrectly over and over again.

Grace’s Guide is the leading source of historical information on industry and manufacturing in Britain. This web publication contains , pages of information and , images on early companies, their products and the people who designed and built them. This early type of bicycle had its wheels side-by-side, instead of one wheel behind the other as later became the standard.
When the designer, Edward Carl Fredrich Otto , was negotiating with BSA for the manufacture of the “Otto,” being anxious to prove that his machine was correct in design and principle, he demonstrated his invention to the Directors by mounting the machine on the large table, riding it backwards and forwards, showing the method of balancing, and explaining the details of the somewhat complicated system of steering.
He then mounted the machine in the Board Room, rode it down the stairs, and so out into the roadway. This performance evidently satisfied the management, as the manufacture of the machine was then taken over and continued during the years to In October, , the B. Company resolved to commence the manufacture of bicycles and tricycles to their own specifications, and the first assortment of these 8 machines were exhibited at the Stanley Show. One tricycle embodied a free-wheel Vernum’s patent.

I’m just starting on my third Parabike restoration. The oddity is the serial number. I’ve always read and been told that they start with an R. This one does not, it starts with a T. It’s plain from the photo and comparison with my other bikes that this is not a light or mis-stamping of an R. Has anyone seen another with a T serial? Being an early Brown colour, there are R serials before and after it.

What this chart is intended to be: This chart has been developed as an additional reference guide more so then simply dating off Sturmey-Archer hubs for the positive identification of Raleigh frames and entire bicycles. As proper factory documentation is very limited, the following charts are a constant work in progress; they have been compiled by examining numerous Raleigh frames from each period, component date codes, decal schemes, color availabilities per year; and – occasionally – official papers.
That said, these charts are representative of U. There isn’t enough data to claim either option as absolute. Keep in mind that these charts are incomplete, and there is a reasonably wide margin of error between serial cutoff dates. Nevertheless, please put your mind at ease – these serial charts have been checked, re-checked, and are as accurate as I can provide at their time of publication.
If new information is found, these charts will be duly updated to reflect such. Otherwise, you might accidentally misidentify your Raleigh bicycle. If your Raleigh is equipped with a Sturmey-Archer rear hub that you suspect has not been been changed, check the date code on the hub’s shell as well for additional verification.

After much lobbying by the manufacturers, Cycling magazine and army officers, the Army Cyclist Corps was eventually formed, and the advantages of the cycle in warfare was proven. Maxwell wrote a book entitled Modern Advertising. BSA supplied military roadsters and folding bicycles in both world wars.
So, you find an interesting old bike and buy it. You research it and become more interested in the marque, as well as its era.
